Semi sotto la neve
Semi sotto la neve — “Seeds under the snow” — is an Italian-language libertarian magazine (ISSN 2974-5632), published three times a year (every four months). This page introduces it in English; the magazine itself is written in Italian.
What it is
The magazine is published by the non-profit social-promotion association Semi sotto la neve, founded in Trento in September 2021. Alongside the magazine, the association organises seminars on classic and contemporary libertarian and anarchist thought, book presentations and discussions, meetings open to members, and shared meals.
The phrase semi sotto la neve — “seeds under the snow” — was coined by the writer Ignazio Silone and later taken up conceptually by Colin Ward. With it we propose a renewed interpretation of anarchist thought, of libertarian experiences and of mutual-aid practices.
Our angle
This tradition of thought and action is best known for negating every form of domination. Our editorial collective wants to turn that gaze around: to bring out the constructive, positive and experimental dimension of an anti-authoritarian, solidarity-based social, political and cultural tradition.
In these pages we give space and voice to the experiences that — in our view — already exist, or once existed. These seeds under the snow are small, concrete utopias inside a hierarchical social order. We read them as prefigurations of a different, anti-authoritarian way of organising social and individual life. Not triumphalist praise of single experiences, but an honest search for their problems, their possible solutions and their contradictions.
Reflection and in-depth analysis are combined with the study and the storytelling of self-managed practices — an “oblique” gaze with respect to domination, in whatever form it takes.
The magazine
Each issue is organised into recurring sections: Editorial, In-depth, Experiences, International, Conversations, Roots, Reviews, Music, Viewing paths and Political vocabulary.
Back issues are freely available on this site — to read online and to download as PDF and e-book. The latest issue is offered here only as a preview (cover and table of contents): it circulates in print. Subscribing is how you receive it — and how you support the magazine.
